SPEECH CAUSES SENSATION

Hevriot’s speech, in connection with which profound disappointment is expressed at the aggressive words of a statesman who, hitherto, has been regarded’ as an advocate of conciliation and peace. The newspapers speak in the bitterest of terms.

One, the Beersen Zeitung, in an article headed “End of the New Conciliation Era,” says the speech confirms the conviction that French Democrats,' Socialists and Pacifists want- the same as the French Chauvinists, namely the Rhine frontier and Germany’s everlasting political, military and economic impotence. i t is'the general opinion that the views of nine out of every ten Germans were reflected in the press outburst, and thus it is feared that. Mr. Harriot’s speech may add_ many recruits to the ranks of the Nationalists, who assert the hopelessness of coining to an understanding with France.
