RETURNING FROM WAIKOKOPU

TO BE .SHIPPED FROM GISBORNE

Those who a short time ago regarded Wnikokopn as the solution of their difficulties with respect- to the shipping of sheep, will, in view of the happenings of the present, week, be forced to revise their opinion. It was popularly believed that sheep could be shipped for very much loss from Waikokopu than from Gisborne, ail'd so 'they can—when vessels are able to work the former port. A mob of 1300 sheep was to have been shipped by the Tbtkanoa at the‘beginning of the present week, but it is very doubtful whether those who intended shipping from Waikokopu will be prepared to .repeat what lias proved a costly experiment. The sheep were to have been shipped on Monday, but word was received to hold them another day. Grazing had I hen to he secured, and fortunately good grazing was obtained. Day by day a postponement would be made ■until it was eyeirtuafl.lv decided that Friday was to be the loading day. The Tlakanoa duly

arrived, but the captain declined to take (lie vessel alongside the wharf, stating that- he did nut consider it would bo safe to do so. It was 'therefore impossible lo load Ihe sheep, ami these are now being brought back lo Gisborne, where they will have to be grazed until such time as a. vessel is available to lake- them to Lytle! lull. it is exlmncf.y unfortunate that the unsatisfactory position •lias arisen with regard to loading at Waikokopu, more especially as the weather this week has been abnormal, but there is no doubt, that the confidence- of the shippers of -sheep in the purl of Waikokopu has been rather badly shaken. Those in charge of I lie present mob are making endeavors to arrange for grazing on (heir return to Gisborne, butinaturnlly with the several road journeys they have had to undergo, the sheep will have gone off in condition. .......
