BRAISE OF PORRITT
(Special to the Herald.)
WELLINGTON, this day
Brown-skinned and looking tlie picture of health and fitness E. W. (“Slip") Carr, the famous Australian sprinter, stepped ot! the Maunganui yesterday to spend tho few hours at his disposal in renewing acquaintances with friends in Wellington. After an extended Lour of the Continent Carr is returning to tlie Commonwealth. During his travels abroad lie has visited many countries, including England, France, Germany, and G’zcclio-Slovakia, but tho place where lie mom enjoyed himself, and where lie struck his best form, was in Dublin, Ireland, at the historic Tail lean games.
"Tho Irish,’ ’he said, "I class with Now Zealanders and Australians as the best sports in the world. They agve me a great time, and 1 made me feel absolutely at home. If there- is one man of whom New Zealanders should be proud,” lie continued, "it is Arthur Porritt, the University man.”
Carr said lie toured Europe with the New Zealand' Rhodes scholar, and could not find suitable words of praise for tbe Maorilander.
"At the Olympic games,” he said, “Porritt ran a splendid race, and I think that, properly managed, he will develop into a real world’s champion.” Regarding the control of the Olympic games. Carr had little to say except to state his emphatic ’'opinion that the world's meeting should he continued and supported by all nations. At the last meeting there were a few “little incidents,” but when one realised tho enormoiisness of the undertaking it was easy to understand that such happenings could not be avoided. As to his activities in the future, Carr is not at all certain, hut at present lie feels that lie would like to retire from competitive running.
