AN INTERESTING VISITOR.
PROFESSOR PEREN IN GLSBORNE.
Professor G. S. Peren, who was recently appointed to the chair of Agriculture at Victoria College, Wellington, is at present paying a visit to this district, and gaining first-hand knowledge of local conditions. Since ho has been in New Zealand, Professor Peren has visited the greater part of the North Island; and has thus become thoroughly conversant with the varying classes of land to be found in the different districts. Recently he has been paying a visit to Hnwkc's Bay and Wairoa. From Gisbomo he proceeds through Motu and Rotorua to the Rimkurn State farm, thence to Feilding. Speaking to a Herald reporter with regard lo agricultural education in New Zealand, Professor Peren said (hat a good deal of organisation work would be necessary. It was proposed to have at least two courses, a degree course for those who wished to study the scientilic side, and a diploma course for those who were practical farmers. It was also proposed to have a college farm, but up to the present no decision as to its location had been made. The aim was to have, a. first-class agricultural college in the North Island. This college would really be independent of Victoria College, and its connection therewith would be nominal rather than actual. Such a proposal involved the. expenditure of a considerable amount, of money, and it was therefore necessary to go slow for a start. When the college became thoroughly established and efficiently staffed, research work could be undertaken and the functions of the college still further enlarged.
