BURGLAR ROUTED
HIT ON HEAD WITH STICK
MELBOURNE, Nov. 28.-—Two lonely women pluckily faced a burglar whom they disturbed'in their home at Toorak about 10 o'clock last night. One wielded a heavy cherrywood «'alking stick with such good effect that tho intruder fled in terror. His forehead probably bears a. painful reminder of his {r'mt. The house was occupied by Miss Clarice Chaw, a school teacher, and her aunt, Miss Turner. Miss Turner went to the front bedroom and was confronted by a well-dressed young man wearing a light colored mask, who demanded her money. The sound of voices prompted Misss Carew to see what, was going on, and she, quickly summing up the situation, grasped a slide from tho hall stand and dealt the intruder a severe blow on the head.
The man made no attempt to defend himself, but rushed out of the door, talcing about. £2O worth of jewellery belonging to Mifs Carew. A search was made, but without result-.
