Gold Light and Deucalion attracted a good deal of attention during their mile and a half gallop yesterday. They went at a solid pace all the way, and there was not much between them fill nearing the winning post when Gold Light gradually drew clear. She was carrying a good weight, and it was a nsetfiil performance, which gained her fresh admirers. Deucalion did not please quite so well, as he was stopping a hit at the finish. All the same it would be unwise to discard him from calculations for the New Zealand Cup, as Ire has done a good preparation. Avola was responsible for a brilliant effort over five furlongs, her time being easily the best registered over that distance. She. finished a long way in front of Murihaupo, but as an cxcuso for tile latter it should be noted that be is frequently a disappointing performer on the track. Rerefnoana moved freely in a fir e furlongs sprint, and hei has a growing circle

of admirers for the Stewards’ Handicap. His latent public form, a win at TrcnIhum, certainly leaves him with a good chance.

Though Muskeloon was beaten in his gallop his admirers had ho cause for nnxifcty. He was always in elosfe attendance on Sunart and Tarleton. He was not ridden out, over the last, furlong. Tile English horse has been in work a long time, and lie was very fit when be arrived here. Another thing in his favor is I hat be finishes well in bis rapes. Tarleton was going on well at flic end of his gallop, finishing hotter than Bunart, though they were on terms at the winning post. Limelight was to have worked with

| Gold Lij;Jil, but. us she was temporarily | off color tho programme "as changed, j and she went a mile ami a ball' aloiuo, Her time was slow, but she satisfied licit trainer, who was not anxious to have her excited too much. Tho Otago mare Mantua has made* many friends for tho New Zealand Cup since her arrival at Riccarton. She has a winning performance at Riccarton over a mile and a half, and under her light weight she is likely to prove very troublesome in tho two mile contest, j Mierausonta showed plenty of speed in j his work, and he looks like being hard to beat in the Stewards" Handicap.
