FAREWELL LUNCHEON

Sir C. Fergus son sails in tie Ruahine tomorrow. He was farewelled at. luncheon at the Hotel Cecil.
Sir J. Allen, presiding, promised Si)' C. E’argusson a great, welcome in New Zealand as the successor to Lord Jellieoe, who had been a great success. liei hoped he would visit. Australia, with which ho had close connections.
Sir C. Fergusson recalled the vivid pleasant memories of his early lifei in South Australia. He feared he had not many qualifications, but bo was going to do bis best. He paid’ a tribute to New Zealand’s .effort during the war. Ha mentioned that, the Now Zealand artillery in 1918 was Hinder his command. He expressed the opinion that the wartime spirit of co-operation and self-sacrifice would furnish the only solution for the present bad economic conditions and unemployment. Sir C. Fergusson declared that a policy of “give and take” between Britain and the Dominions was an absolute necessity. He bolieved that the next five years would show a vast improvement in the .general situation in Britain and the Dominions. He bad the greatest sympathy with the aims and aspirations of the Dominions, and would do his utmost to promote the welfare of the people of New Zealand out. of genuine love and affection.

Sir Charks Fergusson had a quiet farewell, leaving Waterloo for Southampton. A small crowd was present, including a Colonial Office representative and mostly friends, including Lord and Lady Liverpool, Sir James Allen, Sir A. Parkinson. and Sir Thomas Inksip.
