COOK’S COVE.
PRESERVATION OF HISTORIC
SPOT. • (Special to tne Fterald.) TOLAGA, BAY. this day. . Steps are, now being taken to secure the setting aside of Cook's Cove as a national reserve. The matter was taken up some time ago by Mr. E. B .Boland, chairman of tiie Uawa County Council, and a- deputation from the Council waited upon the lions. Nosworthy and Bollard, at- Tolaga Bay, in December last. The matter was referred to tho Scenery Preservation Board, and the Hon. A. D. McLeod has now advised. Mr K. S. Williams that the Board has reported on the proposal. The Scenery Preservation Board reports that, tho landl is suitable for acquisition both from a. scenic and historic point of view. Probably 100 acres will be required. The Board considers that- the Uawa. County Council and the residents of Tolaga Bay should contribute -substanfiai'.lv towards the-cost, the Board being prepared to assist.
Mr. K. S. Williams has now telegraphed, stilting: 'The Minister informs me that if the land price is reasonable ho is prepared to ask Cabinet to find half, on condition the land is transferred to the Crown. This advice has been received here with much gratificaton. indicating the Government is prepared to provide a, HI for £1 subsidy, ft is confidently anticipated that the balance of the amount will lie raised locally, thereby securing for llio public for ail time one of the most lrstnric spots connected with Captain Cook’s early visit to New Zealand. Cook’s Cove, is within about half a rnilo of the site of the new wharf now about- to be constructed at Tolaga Bay.
