GOLD MADE FROM MERCURY

TOO COSTLY FOR COMMERCE. BERLIN, July 16.—Claiming to have realised one of the wildest dreams in human history, Dr. Adolf Meithe, professor in the Charlotten--1 urg University of Engineering, announces that ho has discovered a method for the artificial production of gold—and displays the proof of his achievement. The first gold won by man through the decomposition of mercury glistened in the middle of a small cup of precious, polished agate. The correspondent held it in his hand, passed to him by the discoverer of the process. While the discovery means a revolulion in the world of science, its significance at present is mainly scientific. For the time being, at least, it possesses no economic value, because the cost of production, compared with the infinitesimal amount of gold produced, makes the process unprofitable.
