RECKLESS DRIVING.
COLLISION OF MOTOR CARS
(Special to the Herald.)
CHRISTCHURCH, this day
“The circumstances are shocking,’’ said Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M., in lining Alfred Bolstad £lO for reckless driving of a. motor car. The Magistrate- regretted that lie had no power to cancel Bolstad’s license to drive a car. Bolstad did not appear in Court.
The police evidence supporting the charge was that Bolstad’s car hit another car in Huxley street, and swung right round. The driver of the other car said that Bolstad was either drunk or very ill. but he considered that Bolstad had been drinking. A constable said that Bolstad was standing by his car when witness arrived. An axle of the car was bent. “What did you hit?" asked the constable when he interviewed Bolstad.
"Nothing,” was Bolstad’s reply. “Then what hit- you?" “Nothing.” “What bent the axle?” “Nothing.” The constable said that there were marks suggesting that- the car had been on the footpath. Bolstad was drunk. "'lllis man some time ago drove a car towards Lake Coleridge- and upset, it.” said the Magistrate. “His son was killed, and on that occasion it was suggested that there was drink in the car. That should have been a. lesson. The circumstances arc hadI—shocking. 1 —shocking. .Bolstad should never be in charge of a car. lie is lined £lO. If I had the power to cancel his license I would do so, bul unfortunately I have not got- the power.”
