FIJI BANANAS.

SHUT OUT FROM OOMMQ£C-

WEALTH.

IMPORTANGE OF TRADE

(Received August 2, 10 a.m.) SYDNEY, August 2. Air. Graham, mayor of Suva, who is visiting Sydney, makes a vigorous protest against the Commonwealth duty on Fiji bananas. -He complains tfoat the loss of Australian trade! has hit white planters hard and reduced the direct! steam service with Sydney to one boat monthly. Before the duties were imposed the monthly shipment- of. bananas to Sydney was valued >u- £30,000. Fiji’s demand for Australian .goods has also shrunk greatly.. It now obtains, most of its supplies direct from Britain. The closing of the Australian market has left New Zealand as the only market available for bananas. He urged it was essential to foster a, stable, financially independent, white population in Fiji, in order to prevent control by the Indian elements, which are making ever-increas-ing demands for equal status. Alien control in a place of such strategic importance could not be politically regarded with indifference.
