TOWN EDITION
That a stag should run with bullocks is in itself remarkable, but that an eight-pointer allows a human being to go v.-itliin 30 yards of it and not show a desire to flee is still more so. Yet this is actually happening on a settler's pro perty at Great ford. As the outcome of the heavy storm riming the last week-end numerous private wires, especially those extending to Patutahi and Ngatn'pa, have been out of commission. Being privately-owned these wires are outside the jurisdiction ol the Post and Telegraph Department. Messrs Dalgetyand Co., Ltd., have received cable advice from their; 'head ortue, London, that after 50 years' service, Mr. Henry E. Davison, secretary to the company, has resigned his position, and Mr. Charles Duncan Mackintosh Cow lias been appointed to fill his piace. Definite arrangements and dates have been made, by the Poverty Bay Rugby Union for the representative team which goes on tour south next month.:— Bush Unions, at Paliiab'tua, June 11th; Manawatu, at Palmerston North, June 14th; Dannevirke, June 18th; Ilawk.e's Ray (Banfurly Shield match), June 21st, at. Napier. The town was thronged with people this afternoon, many who had come in this morning to see the fleet remaining for the rest of the day. Whatever shop- j keepers lost through closing in the morning was more than made up* by the busi-| ness done during the afternoon, the dif- j ferent shops being kept unusually busy ' until a late hour. In the turret of No. 5 gun, mpunted aft on the top deck of the light cruiserDragon is a, smalf brass memorial plate bearing the names of a petty officer and eight men. Those whose names appear comprised, the gun's crew when the ship was in action oil' Riga (states the Christchurch Press). An enemy she'll struck the base of the gun and hurled the gun, complete with its crew, into the sea. At different, ports visitors have lump wreaths in the .turret in memory of the gallant gun's crew who died at their post of duty. Had it not been for the thoughlfulness of the Waikanae Beach Society, the "Women's National Reserve, the Navy League, arid the Victoria League, many of the country children who came into town to visit 'the Repulse to-day, might have spent a tiresome and hungry afternoon." The above bodies generously supplied a substantial lunch for all, the meal being served in the pavilion on the Waikanae beach. The following ladies gave valuable assistance : —Mesdames W. E. Gocffe, W. G. Sherratt, H. E. Hill, Green, J. Stevenson. Buckland, E. G. Matthews. J. Webb, Church (sen.), and Misses Rees and V. Green.
