VIOLENT DEBATE AT A CONVEN
TION.
(Reuter's Telegram.) , NEW YORK, May 7.
According to a telegram, the Philadelphia convention of the Protestant Episcopal diocese of Pennsylvania, after revealing marked insurgency, adopted a resolution calling for obedience and sup port on the Prohibition which during the past 24 hours thre,'Uened ; to disrupt the tranquility of the proceedings. *
It arose when a dozen delegates presented a counter-proposal stating that Prohibition enforcement was inefficient, corrupt and unpopular, wherefore the law should be repealed. A violent debate ensued, nnd amid the disorder and dissention. one delegate, seeking to avoid controversy, suggested that the resolution be tabled, since the Church did not require to declare itself on the question, but the insurgent minority meantime gained enough adherents to force a vote, and a measure approving Prohibition was adopted by 162 votes to 64, thus revealing that an excess of 400 delegates failed to vote.
