DAMAGE BY DEER.
AN OPEN SEASON URGED
(Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, last night.
An open season for deer was advocated by Rotariah Press in an address today. Though 1000 to 2000 deer are shot every year, the numbers are increasing and immense damage is done. The fact that the Tension could not be sold resulted in a huge economic avaste. The hides were not worthless, but could be turned to good account. Some beautiful skins had been cured, and could be used for rugs and other purposes. Mr. Press said the time had 1 arrived: when the Government Should do away with licenses in certain areas, throwing them open for deer to he shot and the meat marketed and some use made of the skins.
Mr. Mclntosh Ellis, Director of Forestry, said there were- 300,000 deer in New Zealand, and the number was increasing rapidly, doing enormous damage.
