DIABETIC PATIENTS.
vai.uk: of the, insulin treatment.
(Special to the Herald.) CHRISTCHURCH. this day
'We. have brought people round even when they were in state of coma prior to life leaving the body." said Dr. R. Milligan, of Christchurch Hospital, when speaking of the insulin treatment, which is in use at Christ church Hospital for diabetic patients. The treatment local lv follows the usual course. The insulin is injected, and many patients, thanks lo this recent discovery in the medical world, are able to carry on the ordinary work, provided the directions of the patient's medical .advisers are carried out. as regards diet anj injections. During the past nine months the greatest development in the insulin laboratories has been the discovery of more economical methods of obtaining supplies of insulin. The methods of extraction wore responsible for the high price of the ding in the first instance, but recent discoveries Lav,, enabled insulin lo he extracted at approximately one-third of the cost necessary a year ago. The number of patients receiving treatment for diabetes at Christchurch Hospital is steadily increasing, a great number of new patients having been added to Ibe list. As insulin is not a eu.o. bat merely makes up the deficiency of the secretion of the pancreas, most of the old patients are among the regular attendcrs at the hospital. "We hope thai some day we will be in a position to cure diabetes by liver gland transference, but that is still in tin 1 distance," remarked Dr. Milligan.
