A fire in the early hours of this morning destroyed the residence of Louis •Collins, in Percy street, Whangarei. The ttames secured a strong hold when Collins was awakened. He first removed his wife and baby from a bedroom. Then he was compelled to make a circuit outside the house, in order to rescue two young children sleeping in n room on the other side of the blazing inner passage, and effected his purpose just in time to prevent a grievous tragedy. NEW PLYMOUTH, this day.

A motor garage, owned by the Shuttleworth estate and occupied by J. Barras, was partially destroyed by fire early this morning. Five cars were destroyed, valued at £IO9O, partly covered by insurance. Mr. Barras lost one car. and his plant, estimated at £?.CO. was uncovered. The other tars were the property of various owners. The building was insured for £ICO. CARTERTON, this day.

A motor lorry, laden with 153 cases of benzine, en route from Wellington to Carterton, caught fire near Grey town cemetery yesterday afternoon. The driver stopped the engine, ran the blazing lorry to the roadside, and endeavored to salvage the cargo. He succeeded in saving 28 cases. The rest, together with the lorry, was totally destroyed. There was onlv a small insurance on the lorry and nothing on the benzine.
