ROEBUCK ROAD BRIDGE.

RE-OPENED FOR TRAFFIC. FURTHER WORK TO BE DONE. After being closed for nine days to permit, of repairs being effected to the pier which collapsed, the Roebuck road bridge was re-opened to traffic this morning. It is now considered that the bridge is perfectly safe, and further strengthening work which is to be carried out, will, it is stated, make the structure, useful for quite a. long time. The work which has been done during the past week has been restricted to replacing fflie broken piles, and renewing the portion of the decking which had sagged. Now that this essential work has been completed, attention will bo directed to strengthening the piers which support the bascule. It is also intended to remove the upper portions of th« bascule itself, thus taking a great deal of weight off the structure. In the meantime vehicles crossing the bridge are restricted to a maximum axle load of three tons, but it is thought that when the additional reinforcing has been carried out the structure will be oven stronger than previously. It iR probable that the restrictions of stock will also be removed, although all (ovaflic '-ill be regulated, and th« maximum speed cf motor cars crossing the bridgereduced.
