GISBORNE SCHOOL.
The first of this year's meetings of the Gisborne School Committee was held last'night, there being- present: the chairman (Mr. G. Wildish), Mrs. Church, Rev. J. Aitken, and Messrs. Sawyer, Barr, Robinson and Perry (secretary). Correspondence relating to the Swimming „Chib’s use of the baths was dealt with, the committee deciding that llie agreement entered into early in the season must be carried out. A letter was received from the Hawke’s Bay balneation Hoard, giving the list of new appointments to the teaching staff. The letter further stated that in response to the committee's request, twelve new (leaks had been ordered for the school. The idinirtmm reported on the denial clinics in Napier, where very good work was being done by the officers of the Department. It was decided that the chairman should confer with the chairmen of the other town schools committees regarding the establishment. of a clinic in Gisborne. The visiting committee, Messrs. •Sawyer and Robinson, reported upon several matters requiring attention. If was decided to send a letter to Miss M. Price, expressing regret upon her retirement from the infant department, where she had been teaching for the past four years. The headmaster’s report stated that the children were attending well and the work of tlu* school was proceeding satisfactorily. The roll number was 90!) and the average attendance for the month was Sfil, or 94 per centum of tlie average roll. Several changes had taken place in the personnel of the staff. Four of the teachers had retired from the service, and two of the juniors, Mr. F. Fa ram and Miss Ferris, who had completed their probationary period, wore now attending the Auckland Training College. The undermentioned assistants and junior teachers had been appointed:—Assistants: Misses Middleton, Mathcson, Frizzcl, Argue and Ludwig, and Messrs. 11. Priestley, Murray, Cook and Bishop. Miss M. Price, who had been teaching in the infant department for the last, four years, retired yesterday. He had much pleasifrc in expressing high appreciation of her services. The vacancy had been filled by the appointment of Mr. G. Vigis, who would commence his duties on Mond/iy. The junior teacbersDiad passed the departmental examinations for which they had presented themselves towards the end of last year. At the standard YT. examinations, held in November last, 64 pupils gained certificates of proficiency, while eight gained competency certificates. Two pupils, K. Sheen and R. do Costa, passed the Junior National Scholarship Examination, and two others gained free places. Thanks to the committee’s donation, together with the Board’s subsidy, 147 new books had been added to tlie library. Some of these were kept in each of the classrooms to form the nucleus of a class library. The Earl of Harrowbv and the Lady Frances Ryder had recently visited the school. The dux for 1923’was Ula Mahoney. This report., with that of the finance committee, was adopted. Messrs. Barr and MeMurray were chosen as the visiting comniiTree for Ihe ensuing month. It was decided to provide prizes for the school swimming sports held prior to the summer vacation.
