Relatively we are harder up than our neighbor, though we possess infinitely greater resources.” A hope that the Government might sec its way shortly to abandon the amusement tax entirely as far as sports bodies arc concerned is expressed by the Wellington Rugby Union Committee in its annual report. Towards the end of last season the Government announced a reduction in the tax, and that provided some measure of relief to tile union. However, a sum of £4-18 Os 4d (including the tax on matches controlled by the Wellington Union for the N.Z.R.U.) was paid oyer.
