BOROUGH STREETS.

(To the Editor of the Herald.i Sir, —Ratepayers will notice the deplorable condition of Gladstone Road today.. The Patutahi Quarry dust—not clean chips—has been 'used as a top ’ dressing to the bitumen, with the inj-. evitable result—ihe road is a sea pi *' slush, owing to the free lime.refusing to adhere to the bitumen. Where it can- ‘ not wash off, which it is doing in places, it is simply slush. Motuhom metal lujs already proved (hat it does not make/iniid or dust, and when used with tar or bitumen becomes thoroughly ab- , sobbed, and given a good clean road.. It is cheaper in the long run, than all the experiments that have been tried recently, as proved’by the streets already constructed of this metal, viz., Read’s Quay, Customhouse street, • Lowe street, Peel street (south end), Grey street, Stafford , street, and Roebuck road C-. (bridge end), although the latter was not ’ properly levelled when rolled. Why » cannot our streets be treated in a more modern way, and 1 this filth in town avoided? It” is a noteworthy fact that whon Patutahi metal has been used. ■ Patutahi chips, or quarry dust have been used as a top dressing; not so when Motuhora metal has been the material used, the top dressing put on has been ' r6ad scrapings, sometimes earth, river shingle or Patufahi- screenings.—l am, *'• “DISGUSTED RATEPAYER.”
