FRAUD ON BANKS.
ACCOUNTANTS' CONSPIRACY. (Received Feb. 4, 12.10 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Feb. 4. Detectives arrested Edward Potts and Albert Treloar, both accountants, in connection with the bank frauds. Giving evidence at the Police Court at the hearing of a charge of stealing £ISOO, the properly of. the English, Scottish and Australian bank, a. detective stated that (iii December 18 branches of the bank in Melbourne received letters stating that Russell, the son of a well-known Sydney racing man. would be visiting Melbourne, and would require a certain sum of money. Litter further letters were received confirming the code teiogram. Specimen signatures also had been received from Sydney. These were written on the bank's own forms. On December 21 Treloar, who then was employed as an accountant, victimise*:! the bank. He drew £3500 in favor of Potts, the latter presenting papers which apparently were in order. Potts some time later went to another branch of the bank, but the manager, becoming suspicious, # communicated with the police, who interviewed Treloar and received a. description of Potts. Warrants for the arrest of the two men were then issued. Treloar was taken to the watch house where he confessed that he entered into an agreement with Potts to obtain money from the bank. Potts was arrested and admitted that he entered into j"i agreement with Treloar. The sum of £IOSO was recoveral at Treloar's home. Tho detective further stated that the total amount the men attempted to get was ten thousand pounds.
