MATAKAOA COUNTY COUNCIL.

At a meeting of the Matakaoa County Council there were present : The chairman, (Vs. Dr. Wi Kepa, Wood, Heed, and Maddox. Absent: (.'vs. Beckett, Clarke, Kemp, and Walker. Cr. Clarke was granted leave of absence. A claim tor £9 19s 7d lodged by the To Araroa Trading Company, for three sides of black harness leather which fell oft' the Te Araroa jelly into the sea and were lost, was then read. It was resolved that the claim be paid. Correspodence was dealt Willi as follows : ... From Mr. Allen, stock inspector for the Department of Agriculture, covering specimen of wincberry for the inspection of the Council. -Resolved that Mr. Allen he thanked lor the specimen, and that he he advised that the Council had no knowledge of the plant being in this county. From the Medical Officer of Health, advising that he had interviewed the Registrar of the Native band Board, re assistance in the way of a guarantee of pavment of rates towards the proposed water supply fur Te Araroa township, and that the registrar had promised to have his Hoard give the matter early consideration. The writer also submitted recommendations and outlined the steps to be taken towards furthering the proposal. The chairman advised that he had. as a result of requests made to him by the Te Araroa townspeople, recently, convened a meeting, when ,tho matter of a water supply for the township was discussed, and that he had subsequently interviewed Dr. Mercer on the matter, who promised him the information furnished. From the registrar of the Tairawhiti District Maori Laud Board Office, requesting schedules showing particulars ot native owned blocks and the outstanding rates in respect of same as from the year 1909. "applied. From Messrs. Hees, Bright, ami Waitchop, reporting upon matters pertaining to the collection of outstanding rates.— Received. From Messrs. S. Gppenhcimer and Co., making .application for renewal of license for their sausage casing factory at Hicks Uav.—Granted, From the Public Works Department, covering copy of RW. form IC3, contain ing terms and conditions under which Government grants are to be expended. —Received. From the Public Works Department, covering schedule showing the proposed authorisations up to March 31, 1924, oi items provided for in the current year's appropriations.—Received. Tenders as follows were received : Fot the supply of 65C0 battens for the Taurangakaut'uku road: From S. Hale, £i per ICQ; C. W. Cowan, £3 5; Mold Ngatai, £2 9; IT. Brooking (accepted), £1 ss. For the erection of a roadman's cottage and stable, etc.. on the Hicks Bay hit paddock : From F. Sponce, £295; V Pahuru. £290; Geo. Brown (accepted), £270. For the supply of 2COO birch posts and the required fencing upon the PolakaWaikura road: From Paul Wire. £430; A. Mornn. £353 2s 6d : R. Cool; (accepted). £325 10s. The chairman advised (hat. Mr. Ludlaiul had. agreed In accept £2O per am as compensation for about Q acres of his land taken for the Taurangakaut'.iki mad; and that lie was prepared to entei into reasonable arrangements for water compensation later.—Proposed by Cr. .Dr. Wi Repa. and seconded by Or. Mad dox .and carried, that Mr. Rudland be paiil £2O an acre lor !":,!. acres of his land taken for road.

The chairman (hen asked whether any of the ratepayers of the Whaogaparaoo district notified to attend the meeting had appeared to object- to the closing oi the road passing through the. Wlumgaparaoa 2 L block.-The clerk advised that none of the ratepayers had put in an appearance, and that no objections to the stopping of the road had been lodged.Cr. Wood proposed, seconded by Cr. Reed, and carried, that the portions ol the original survey of the road through Wliangaparaoa 2 I- block, where devia tions have been made, be forthwith closed.

Proposed by Or. Dr. Wi R'epa, seconded bv Cr. Madiiox, and carried : That tlu chairman and clerk be authorised to call tenders for O'Regah's and Pettie's roads as soon as the plans approved by tlu Public Works Department come to hand, so that such tenders can be submitted at the next meeting of the Council; also that tenders be called for the erection oi a fence on the Whakaaing'iaiiigi road. The wharfinger, Mr. I'agan, was asked by the chairman whether there was foundation to the rumor in circulation that he hail on various occasions refused to accept wool at the jetty shed on the grounds that the shed was full.—Mr'. Fagan replied that ho had not on any occasion refused to receive wool into the shed.

Proposed by Cr. Dr. Wi Hopa, seconded. by the chairman, and carried: That Mr. F. S. Jackson be appointed as collector for back rates which are shown on a list prepared by the clerk, and that he be paid a commission of 5 per cent, on such rates collected. The overseer submitted his monthly report, and received his instructions foi the ensuing month; v Thc clerk was instructed to write the Taupo Totara Timber Company, asking it to expedite the forwarding of the culvert limber ordered for Cape Runaway, Accounts amounting to £S22 Is Id were passed for payment. HICES RAY HARBOR HOARD. At the ordinary meeting on January 25 there were present : The chairman, Cre. Dr. Wi Repa. Wood, Reed, and Maddux. Absent: Crs. Beckett, Kemp, Clarke, iind Walker. ' Correspondence was dealt with as follows : From Messrs. Blair, Mason, and Co., covering quotations for mooring bollards. -The chairman advised that the clerk had already submitted the quotations to him, and that an order had been placed with Mossrs. Geo. Frnser and Sons, ot Auckland, who had quoted the lowest for the mooring bollards. From Mr C. H. McCracken, covering account for £lO3 18s 6d for repairs tc tramline washout and retaining wall con'struction, and reporting that further reTiairs were still necessary to the tram line, and that the bulk of the materia! was to hand for the wharf; also request ing a progress payment of £650 on thi wharf contract.—-Resolved that Mr. McCracken be given a progress payment o! £o£o, and that the matter of further repairs to the tramline be left over uriti the chairman had viewed the requirements.

The Gisborne SheopfArmms' statements of the receipts and expenditure of thf harbor for the months of November and December. 1923, were then read. -He solved that the company be paid for the charges made for the month of Novern bor, and that the December statement be referred back for full particulars of the item of £Bl 17 8 8d appearing for repairs and maintenance to locomotive and trucks.

A return of the imports and exports of the harbor for the year ending December 31. 1923, as furnished by the Gisbofne Sheepfarmers' Company, was then read and received. Accounts amounting to £1026 10s 3d were passed for payment.
