WAIMATE, last night. The quarterly meeting of tho South Island Motor Union was presided over by Air. J. S. Hawkes (president), Christchurch.
The North Otago club was granted affiliation.
Mr. W. E. Taylor suggested that telegraph poles on different routes bo painted in colors, r to ,aid of motorists in finding the main routes. It was decided to try a scheme of painted discs on tho Invercarglll-Piolon (main south road), black and cream being suggested.as suitable colors. Tho outline of a scheme in regard to a tax on tyres was left to'the president to communicate ;with the Government. Air. E. A. Scott referred to the bridging of the Lower: Rangitata river, and the meeting decided to recommend the Highways Board to consider bridging one mile below the railway bridge to shorten the distance on the main south road.
On the motion,of Air. A. W. Woods, a resolution was passed expressing surprise that tho l revenue from taxes on tyres on imported vehicles would not be credited to the. highways account, and tho meeting demanded that the amount be ascertained and credited.
Air. Scott referred to the by-laws restricting the use of the headlights in tho city limits,' and a resolution was passed viewing with apprehension, in Iho interests of public safety, the action of borough and city councils in forming such by-laws.- There are numerous instances oven in city limits where headlights are necessary. With a desire to find a solution of the difficulty, all-motor unions in New Zealand arc considering the matter, and we. tutge:> that , uiitjl a devision is .'.-arrived' >at - • such ' ■ by jaws’ should not be., enforced.
