CRITICS OF CRICKET.

MATCH ABANDONED

SYSTEM OF SELECTION.

LONDON, Aug. 14.—Largely owing to criticisms of the selections, the return cricket match, North v. South of England, has been cancelled, and a match, England v. The Rest, has been substituted! It will begin on Saturday.

A notable absentee from the team is J. W. H. T. Douglas, of Essex, who to-day replied to the selectors with' a capital ot 147 runs, not' out, against Gloucester. O'Connor, the young Essex professional, made a brilliant 1 score' of 128.'-;'

■ Yorkshire, playing on a. soft wicket, caused a surprise by baihg beaten by Derbyshire by one run inl the first innings* Yorkshire duly proceeded to "skittle" Derbyshire, which lost eight wickets for 94, in the .second innings.

Critics complained in June that the selectors were not taking the course most likely to 'provide 1 a team to recover the "ashes" from Australia. They asked why Mann' and Card, had been chosen as captains, and declared that Fender (Surrey), was the most inspiring leader. It was also contended that not enough youngsters had been selected. '
