ROSE BOWL TOURNAMENT,

ROVERS v. HOKOWHITU-A-ATUA

The conditions obtaining on the ground when Rovers (black and white) took the field against ilckowhitu-a-ataa (blaclc and red) this morning were far from pleasant. The field wag very heavy and rain was failing during the greater portion of the match. Consequently there was no fast or spectacular play on either side. Reds took the field two players short, and were thus at a. disadvantage throughout the game. Both teams were very evenly matched, but Rovers managed to score daring the first half. In the second spell Hokowhitu had the best, of the game, hut were unable to score and time -was colled with the score remaining, Rovers 1, lioko-whitu-a-atua ml. Messrs Henderson and iStuhbin.gs acted as referees. MURIWAI v. TOKOMARU.

The second game of the day was played under slightly better conditions, as the rain had eased off somewhat, but the heavy .nature of the ground prevented any really good play. The game opened steadily with blues attacking, and the bul was rapidly carried within the 25, but a good save by Muriwai's goalkeeper eased the situation. Tol>o- - showed superior combination but the exceptionally heavy condition of the ground near, tihe goal made scoring very difficulty Blues continued to attack and after some neat play, Miss Carr was successful in placing the ball within the net. Tokomani 1, Muriwai nii.j From the V bully-off blues got away with the ball but were unable to score. Ati this stage Miss Tone Cockery had the misfortune' to receive a nasty- knock on the face with the ball,. sustaining a broken tooth and facial injuries, and was unable to continue playing. Muriwai made one determined attempt to score, their forwards carrying the ball well down the field, but blues’ goalkeeper imade a good save, and their one chance of scoring during the match was lost. Timo was called with the ball well up in the green territory, and Muriwai were fortunate that the match was /not played on a, fast ground or the result would probably have been very different. Messrs Cassin and Henderson acted as referees.

The final of the men’s competition, to have. been played between Mercanti’e and Civil Servicf, on the reserve - tomorrow, will now not be, plaved. Civil Service having forfeited to Mercantile, thereby making them winners of the competition for 1923. ,
