TE ARAROA-HICKS BAY.

To Araroa Hockey Club sent a team to Tikitiki lust week, and ' were badly beaten by 8 points to nil. Our girls, in* spite of their drubbing, sfcem to have enjoyed themselves. Wo are expecting a return visit by the Tikitiki ladies.

Mr. J. Forteous, chief inspector of native schools, examined the local school during the heavy storm last week, ll was pitiable to" see children from the outlying district arrive wet through, s<> anxious were they to be present at tbe animal examination. There should really be another school up the Awalere river or at Tokata between Te Aravoo. and Hicks Bay. Since tho increase of population at Hicks Ray owing to the establishment of the freezing works, the want of a hall for social evenings was very much felt. In lieu of a ball the cook-house at the works met the want for a time. A few gentlemen put their heads together, and as a result a fine hall has been putup. It "was opened on tbe lOtli inst., when a largo crowd turned up, many having come from tho Ray of Plenty. A team representing the Matakaoa sub-union left on the 16th to play against the Apanui sub-union for the Heiii Houkamau memorial cup. After failing on their first effort to lift the eup the Apanui representatives succeeded two years ago and carried it off in the greatest triumph. It is u soro point with the Matakaoa natives that tho cup should now be in the Bay of Plenty. The Matakaoa team were accompanied by a large number, both of men and women, and on their way to Te Kaha they were treated right royally by the Bay of Plenty natives. Tho team that went were by no means representative of the sub-union; several of our best players after thoir strenuous trip to Poverty Bay wore unable to undertake the jour, ney. The match was played at Te Kaha on" Saturday, and resulted in a walkover for Apanui, who won by 31 points to nil.—(Own Correspondent.)
