BUTTER FOR AUSTRALIA.
NEW ZEALAND EXPORTS. "The efforts of New Zealand butter producers to extend their export business to Australia have been met by many irksome restrictions offered by the Australian authorities," said Mr. W. Goodfellow, managing director of the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company at Hamilton. He said that Australia was still buying butter in limited quantities but the authorities were placing every obstacle in the way of importers, presumably with the. object of discouraging importations of New Zealand butter and cheese into Australia: Recently the New Zealand Dairy Company had had a shipment of 2000 boxes held up, and it was not ' until Mr. Massey intervened that the produce was released.
The Commonwealth regulations regarding imported butter were very stringent, continued Mr. Goodfellow, and considerable care had at all times to bo exorcised in order to comply with these conditions. When supplies were short it appeared that the authorities relaxed their restrictions and no objections were raised to importations. When, however, . Australian merchants were holding stocks, and did not desire, importations of butter into the country, all sorts of tcchhical objections were raised by the customs officials.
