The largest lighthouse organisation 4 in the world is that of the United States. It now maintains 16,373 aids 'to navigation. It has in commission ] 117 vessels, and during the year three new tenders or supply boats were built, and one new lightship convicted, the latter to replace the one sunk by a German submarine off Cape Hattcras. Of the 6000 persons in the service only 39 arc located in Washington. A new steamer, the Comus, designed and built by Poole and Steele, of Bal-. main, Sydney, for Captain Broadfoot, \sas launched on June 30. The Comus is aOO tons gross register, and her keel was laid at the company's yards three months, ago. She will be ready for her maiden run in two months. The approximate cost of the new steamer will be £22,000. She will be engaged in the inter-State trade, specially between the North Queensland ports and Sydney. The greatest peril to shipping is fog. Until, recently the e&ptain of a ship has had no practicable means of accurately locating in a fog either his own ship or other ships which ho is meeting. The radio fog signal and radio compass gave the navigator .accurate bearings in fog just as well as in clear weather. In his annual report to Secretary Hoover, the Commissioner of Lighthouses states that several additional radio fog signals have been installed during the past year, including one on the new lightship off Cape .Hattcras, and one oh San Francisco lightship. This country now has five such stations regularly in operation, and six moro will be installed in the near future. The United States is in advance of any other nation in the establishment of those protective signals. Their cost is stated to be very moderate, as they can be operated by the regular employees on lightships and at lighthouses. , TELEGRAPHIC SHIPPINGSydney: Arrivcr, at 7 a.m., Manuka, and at 7.3 Q a.m., Makura, from New Zealand.
