MATIERE-OHURA RAILWAY.
GREATER PROGRESS URGED
A deputation from the Ohura Railway League waited, upon the Minister for Public Works, the- Hon. J. G. Coates, and urged greater progress in the construction of the 10 miles of line between Matierc, the present terminus, and Ohura.
ilr. G. Loveday, chaimiail of the league, said much of the earthwork had been completed, and the line could be constructed within a year. At the present rate of progress, however, it was likely to take about five years. Referring to the difficulties with which settlers had to contend in the matter of access. Mr. Lovcdav asserted that about 20 soldier settlers and several others had left their properties. The Minister remarked that settlers did not usually leave their farms because of poor access if the land was good, and he would require to consider that aspect of the matter. He did not wish to make any pronouncement as to his department's attitude toward the line, preferring the settlers to await the publication of the statement of the Public Works Department. The line would neither be the first nor the last to be completed. The deputation also waited upon the Prime Minister, who promised favorable consideration.
