UAWA COUNTY COUNCIL.

At a special meeting of tho Uawa County Council, there wijro present: Crs. E. B. Boland (chairman), D. H. Hawkins, D. Caldwell, E. C. Loisel, J. A. Moore, J. S. Paterson, and C. E. Smith. Tho chairman, t on taking bis seat, thanked councillors for re-electing him to the position, in his absence, and in welcoming new councillors to tlfc table, stated that lie hoped that tho coming year would he one of success and progress.

Councillors united in a welcome home to the chairman.

A motion given notice of by the chairman was moved by him as follows: “That the road from tho Tolaga-Takapau main road to the Taharangi bridge Delta road', bo included in the main roads of the County.” Tho proposition was seconded by Cr. Moore, and after discussion was carried. A letter had been received from the. secretary of the New Zealand Counties’ Association, asking for tho name and official position of the County’s delegate. —On the motion of the deputy-chairman, seconded by Cr. Caldwell, it was resolved that the chairman, Cr. E. B. Boland, be appointed delegate to tho Now Zealand Counties Conference to be held in July.

Cr. D. H. Hawkins moved that a remit t.o tho Counties’ Conference be prepared as follows:—“That tho Counties’ Conference considers the making of representation to Parliament with a view to having Blackberry Boards sot up with power to make rates for tho eradication of the blackberry.—Tho proposition was seconded by Cr. Loisel, and carried. On the motion of the deputy-chairman, seconded by Cr. Smith, it was resolved that tho chairman be authorised to sign an authority to tho Union Bank of Australia, covering the signing of cheques by any two> councillors and the treasurer for overdraft up to the legal limit if same be required. / Application for permission to erect a telephone lino was granted to Mr. G. M. Reynolds, subject to work on tho road being .".proved by the 'Counpty engineer.

Estimates for the coming year were considered, and it was resolved, on tho motion of tho chairman, seconded by the deputy-chairman, that rates be struck at tho July meeting as shown in schedulo presented, setting out that tho rate required in Arakihi riding would be 3£d, Hauiti riding 31,d, Mangatuna riding 31-16 d, Tamvhareparao riding 3fjd, Tolaga riding 4d in the £ on tho unimproved rating value. Tho schedule was as follows Interest on Loans —New loans, includes interest on £54,000 special loan, portion of Workers’ Dwellings Loan and Antecedent Liability Loan: Arakihi £930, Ilauiti £612, Mangatuna £791. Tauwhareparae £1229, and Tolaga £ll6, total £3728. Old loans: Arakihi £345. Hauiti £226, Mangatuna £293, Tauvvhareparan £455, and Tolaga £62; total £l3Bl. General expenditure, including Charitable Aid £1460, salaries, health inspector, accident and general insurance, motor car and motor lorry repairs, and interest on overdraft £2033, main roads £1220, freehold property and tools £228, and Pakarao river bridge, £1502, Arakihi £IBOB, Hauiti £llBO, Mangatuna £1537, Tamvhareparao £2390, Tolaga £322; total £7245. Riding expenses: Arakihi £738, Hauiti £395, Mangatuna £475, Tauwhareparae £1607,' Tolaga £290; total £3580. Total amount required £15,934; amount to be produced by rate £15,837.
