LONG-DISTANCE TELEPHONING.
LONDON, April If). —In long-dis-tance telephoning the lips should almost, touch the Transmitter. This advice was given to the public by an official of the post office. “It has been found by experiment,” be said, “that every half-inch the lips arc away from the transmitter represents a Joss of 20 standard miles of effective speech. In other words, over n hundred-mile call the effectiveness of speech is reduced in aur.h circumstances by 20 oer cent.
“By not speaking with their lips close up to the transmitter subscribers job themselves of time, temper, and money.
“ ‘Speak in syllables' is another golden rule for longdistance telephonists. Quick speech is never advisable.”
