Thu claim for £1137 by Frank Bull, owner of the trotter Wild Hebe, against James McTaggart, hotelkeeper, Mctliven, lessee, representing damages resulting from disqualilication, has concluded at Ashburton. Judgment was given for the plaintiff for £133. Tho weather in the I'ukctitiri, llawkcs’ Bay, district, has been very rough for upwards of a week, and two falls of snow wero experienced. On the lower levels (hero was a depth of show of three inches, but on higher land it was nine inches ;deep. On tho ranges tho snow was up to eight feet deep. Heavy frosts have also been experienced since tho snow fell, and a complete thaw is not expected till Ihe spring. Four prisoners escaped from Mount Eden gaol who wero working in a quarry, and made a sudden bolt. It was a few minutes before they were missed. The four ran together to the Great South road, tho police pursuing. In their flight they passed through Mr. Justice Herdman’s garden. They were then lost sight of. Later their prison garb was found at a house in the Itemuera district, a fair supply of civilian clothes being missing. King was recaptured in the city at 3.30, and Hayes was re-captured in the city at 5.30. It is stated. that King later attempted to escape from Newton police station, llayes and Windsor wero sentenced at Wellington, the others at Auckland, for breaking and entering.
