The United States has sent an ultimatum to the Chinese Government, demanding not only the safe return of the American captives now in the bandits' power, but also guarantees against the future recurrence of such outrages. The ultimatum gave notice that the United States would take whatever steps were necessary to assure the present as well a 3 the future safety of American nationals in China. PEKIN, May 8. Foreign diplomats at a meeting here demanded that the Chinese Government should ransom the captives.
