HEAVY RAIN.

IUVEPu HIGH AT WHATATUTU.

The Wnipaoa x-iver was very high at Whatatutu this afternoon, and heavy rain was falling. In the country behind the township, rain has been falling intermittently for three or four days, one? the river 'is unfordable. Unless the rain continues throughout the night, there is, it is believed' at Whatatutu, no danger of a flood-. A report was received from Te Karaka to-day, indicating that the prospects are not bright. The Waipaoa river had fallen slightly since this morning, but rain set in again very heavily about two o'clock, and seemed to bo general all over the district. It was feared that if the rain continued, the river will have risen to the point of danger by ten o'clock to-night. From Ecro, it is reported that, the river is high, but not yet in real flood. The rain set in at about midnight, and has been falling almost continuously since. This afternoon the fall was heavy, and tho indications j were that, it would continue.

The Wharekopae river discharges into the Waipaoa, and has a considerable effect upon the condition of the larger stream.

The Waihuka river, at Waikohu, is reported to have risen three feet between noon to-day and three o'clock-, and was still rising rapidly at that time. There was heavy rain falling in tho country drained by the stream, and the. prospects of cessation were not promising. _____
