The celebrated Spanish matador, Mendez, was gored and dreadfully injured in the first bull fight of tho season at Bordeaux. He fought three bulls. He bad placed a pair of banderillos on the first when it charged him and knocked him back to the ground. He was not seriously hurt and proceeded to despatch the bull, and then a second. Great enthusiasm was shown, the crowd admiring the almost reckless daring. He faced the third bull, whereof he had previously expressed a fear. The bull charged forthwith and tossed Mendez, who just managed to clamber to safety and fainted. Ho was gashed in the abdomen and partially disembowelled. Internal haemorrhage set in from a severed artery. An operation was immediately performed in the hospital, Mendez refusing an anaesthetic. His condition is critical.
