OCEANIC COMPANY TO BUILD NEW STEAMERS.

The Oceanic Steamship Company has completed plans for two 500 ft. twinscrew liners, which will be commenced immediately if the United States Government accedes to tho company's proposal to renew the present Australian mail contract for ten years at, a slight increase in rates. Mr. Samuels is now en route to Washington to discuss the contract, with the Postal Department. Tho new ships would ply from San Francisco to Honolulu, Pago Pago, and Sydney, shortening the running time to 18£ days. The vessels will have turboelectric propulsion, and be capable of 19 knots in ballast and 18 knots fully loaded, maintaining 15 knots on a cruising radius of 20,800 miles.

Tho Messageries Maritimes Company has so reorganised its Australian Pacific service that in future vessels coming to Australia will not. extend their voyages to Noumea, while the now service from France to New Caledonia will be carried on via Panama Canal, the vessels cnllind at Pateete, Wellington, and Westport. The first vessel of the new service, the. El Kantara, sailed from Dunkirk on April 22. A steamer will sail every six weeks from Dunkirk and this will replace the farmer service to Australian ports.
