RECORD OF 233.87 MILES AN HOUR IN AIR.
DAYTON, 0., March 26.—Flying over tho one-kilometre course to-day at Wilbur Wright field, Lieut. R, L. Maughan. by making an average of 233.87 miles an hour, set a new world's record. He exceeded the world's record of 233.01 made by Sadi Lecointe, tho French flying ace, by .85.
BANK PRESIDENT CHARGED AS , EMBEZZLER.
BOSTON, March 29. TURKEY DRIFTING AWAY FROM SOVIET.
CONSTANTINOPLE. March 24. Turkey's relations with Russia are getting worse, Angora now refusing to recognise the Soviet commercial delegation in Constantinople, which was installed here two years ago and was accredited to the exiled Sultan's Government. Mustapha Kernel's ministers aro ordering that all Russian transactions shall be handled through tho Soviet legation at Angora. This does not facilitate Russian trade with Turkey, which is just beginning to bud here. Tho first steamer flying the Soviet flag to be seen in the Golden Horn arrived here yesterday.

LONDON, March 26. The latest marine invention now in use on a Newcastle pilot boat is a machine which throws a. beam of light to the saa hottorn, allowing the depth of the water below the ship to Be gauged, Soundings may thus be done away with, The Invention* I.s of unusual importance since it may be usefully employed by the big liners' when entering shallow wafer.*.
The searchlight is worked throned a hole in the lower part of tho ship, while an observation window is placed nearby, through which the li°rht may be seen. A mirror is f«t nt the end of. a long observation tube running through the ship to the bridge. By working a handle an officer can take any angle on tlie projection beam and by a single calculation measure the depth of the water below.
