A fire attended with fatal results, occurred in th«-> Young Women's Hostel to-night. Ir apparently broke out in a room occupied by Miss Oourlay, an immigrant, who had just arrived by the Ulimaroa. Screams were hoard coming from her room on the top storey, and volumes of smoke rolled along the passage and prevented rescue until the unfortunate woman, who it is believed was suffocated by smoke, was dead. The bodv was also burnt in places. WELLINGTON, this day.
The origin of the fire in the V. W. C. A. hostel. MacDonald Crescent, remains a mystery. The victim, Miss Gourly, who arrived from Sydney by tho Ulimaroa only yesterday morning. She was to have proceeded this morning to her destination, which is at present unknown.
The immigrants arriving by the Rotorua today wore to have been accommodated n't the hostel to-night, but authorities state that accommodation will now be found for them elsewhere. Great difficulty in reaching the seal of Iho fire was experienced by the brigade, and ;is tho nearest. water. hydrant was located in Wellington Terrace, a considerable length of hose was required, causing delay.
