DEATH OF CANON F. GOULD-
Referring to the death of CttWoti Frank I Gould, one of the Oldest and best-known of the clergy of the Anglican Church in New Zealand, the Auckland Herald states; The deceased, who had resided at Gisborne for the past few years, arrived in New Zealand as a young man of 21, in 1848. being a passenger to Auckland by the ship (Main. He ciUue out to join Bishop Selwj n and on his arrival took up work at St> John's College, where ho had cluirgn of thte boy students. After being at St. John's for four years he was ordained by Bishop Selwyn and then went to Russell in which district he was stationed for nine years. He was then transferred to Otahuhu, where he remained for the long period of 43 years. The parish formerly was that of Otahuhu-eum-Pannmre nini for some years Ellerslie als<* wits included in the area.
For many years alter coming to Otahuhu Canon Gould extended his ministrations over a wide area. 11 was shortly after bis arrival from Russell thai the Waikato war broke out ami lie served as a chaplain with Hie troops for some time. He also, for many years, paid quarterly visits to the Kaipftm and Northern Wairoa districts, then in the early stages of settlement. He had many varied and interesting experiences in those eraly days of the province, and on one occasion he walked from Auckland to Rotorua.
Canon Gould was a prominent Freemason and was a member of the Lodge Ara and Lodge St. Andrew', of the Scottish constitution. He was chaplain of the former lodge for some years, and he also held office as grand lodge chaplain for some time. In 190.1, owing to his advancing years, he retired from his position as vicar of Otahuhu, and subsequently took up his residence nt Gisborne.
