DAIRY POOL.
DETAILS OF PROPOSALS.
(Special to tno Herald.)
WELLINGTON, this day
The main outline of tho plans for the daiiy pool was communicated to the Dominion Farmers'. Union Executive by Mr. F. W. Hubbard, of Palmerston North, who expressed a strong opinion that if we could como more directly into contact with consumers in Great Britain it would be much better for the producers here. He thought it would be an advantage if the board in London and other parts at Home should procure or erect cool stores of sufficient capacity to hold, say, half our annual output. If that were done wo''could take immediate advantage of any riso in price which might tako place. At present a very large proportion, probably as much as GO per cent., of our butter was used for blending. He thought that the proposed board, as set out in the Bill, required considerable amendment both in respect to its constitution and its functions. He did not see that very great advantage would be gained by controlling tho export from this end under the existing circumstances. We deal solely with wholesale merchants or firms in Great Britain, whereas he thought we should endeavor to supply retail vendors direct; also mill our butter at a London cool butter depot into retail lots of single pounds, and have each pound stamped "N.Z. Ist grade," or "N.Z. 2nd grade," as the case might be That would tend to a large extent to eliminate all possibilities of blending.
Members of tho executive then considered in detail the provisions of the Dairy Produce. Export Control Bill proppsed to be introduced into Parliament at the approaching session. Several amendments were suggested, and the following motion was carried: "That the union supports the Dairy Produce Control Bill as set out, with a proviso that the nine producers on the board bo elected directly from the dairy producers themselves, but that the method be left to a conference of delegates from the dairy interests."
