MODERN TO BE WOIIN
IX SHAKESPEAREAN PLAY
LONDON, April 12.—The Birmingham Repertory Theatro, the most famous repertory company in Britain, will celebrate Shakespeare's birthday by playing "Oymbeline," dressed! in modern fashions. The Roman soldiers will wear the uniform of the modern Bei'saghlieri, the ancient Britons will appear in khaki, the actors in the wager scene will wear dinner-jackets, and 1 lachimo a full evening dress when he gets out of the trunk. Mr. John Drinkwater (poet and! dramatist) says that this interesting experiment may widen the perspective with regard! to thei theatre. Sir Israel • Gollancz (editor of the tencentenary memorial volume on Shakespeare) says tihat the idea is grotesque, but that good 1 acting may justify the experiment. The promoters claim that Shakespeare would' be more real played in modern instead of historical costumes.
