CORRESPONDENCE.

(To the Editor or tne HeraJd.J

Sir, —Intolerance in religion or in anything else is considered a characteristic of the dark ages, so it is surprising that a man of Dr. Oliver's scholastic attainments (anfl he no doubt claims something of the kind_, made, in America) should show such marked intolerance of all forms of thought other than his own. He resorts to cheap invective, and holds up to ridicule great men such as A'oltaire and Darwin, whose chief fault lay in their inability to see eye to eye with him. I ask you, sir, howcan any great good be done by a man whose mission seems to consist in adversely criticising all other religions? Unitarians are now receiving a share of his venom, and it is not surprising, as Dr. Oliver's store of abusive epithets stv.'ins boundless and fills me with amazement, mingled with awe. As ho has no message of "goodwill towards men" it is quite time he returned to America where they have apparently more sympathy with his methods and do not mind insulting remarks. J3r. Oliver seoms particularly amazed with Gisborne at present, no doubt because many of the people see no attraction in the prospect of a heaven in which he occupies a front seat. With regard to the Socialist's whom he so despises, I am not a Socialist but I heard more Christian charity and brotherly love in five nrnutes from a Socialistic speaker than I have heard or read in all Dr. Oliver's numerous discourses.—l am. etc., ~ CITIZEN.
