COLLEY SHIELD COMPETITION. POVERTY BAY CLUB GAINS VICTORY. Rowing in the inter-club donblc-sculls competition at Tolaga Bay yesterday, Poverty Bay Bowing Club won the Colley Shield, thus establishing its allround supremacy in rowing on the East Coast. The Poverty Bay representatives won the senior a;ul junior events, and dead-heated with Gisborne in tho lightweight class. Uowa won tho youths’ doubles. Since Hie contests which involved the L.V.A. and Neill shields, for four-oar and single-sculling, interest has centred on the Colley shield competition, and yesterday saw a very large attendance of rowing men and of tho gepepal public o.p the banks of the Uawa river. The Uqwa Club had held the trophy for several years ip succession, and Poverty Bay’s successes in the other inter-club events had added keenness to the general excitement. The races were worthy of the gathering, and the victory was hard-Yvop. The senior' race wont to Poverty Ray rather easily, the Uawa Club having hard luck in losing the services of B, Lincoln, who injured his back on Easter Saturday, and consequently was unable to row. T. Dobbs replaced him in the senior stroke seat, and with his mate put up a good fight, but tho Poverty Bay crew was too experienced and had splendid combination. Tho lightweight and youths’ races were of exceptional interest, and the deadheat which resulted in the lightweight class was the first witnessed for many years. In the youths’ doubles, the finish was so close that a half-length covered the difference b.etwcpn the three boats.

The officials were: Messrs. YV. Lockwood and A. J. McCr.eedy (judges), W. i Prince, G. M. polefirook, R. Goodly, P. V. Hickey, and J. A- Moore ! (umpires), G. A. Neill (timekeeper), J. ■ P. Guthrie R. P. Holder (clerk , of scales), apd A. R. Gardiner (lion, secretary ipter-club committee). The events resulted as follows: Seniqr Roubles (1J miles): Poverty Ray (D. Sdenzips apd R- Patty) 1, Uawa (T. Dobbs aii'd J- Lincoln) 2, Gisborne (R. J. Pellovy and E. Hfinkey) 3, The winners went away smartly, Gisborne losing ground badly in the first few strokes. Poverty Bay got an early lead, and when the first mile was covered the crew was rowing easily and holding a lead of a couple of lengths. Uawa led Gisborne by about tho same margin, and the positions did not change up to the finish. The positions at the start were : Uawa, Gisborne, Poverty Bay. Junior Doubles (1J miles) : Poverty Bay (E. Corbett and Win(er) 1, Gisborne (YV. Ilankey and A. C. Arthur) 2, Uawa (YV. Penfold apd YY. Lockwood) 4. Uawa drew the inside course, Poverty Bay middle, and Gisbofne outside. Gisborne was again lacking ip dash at the start, and when the crews lengthened out- was last, about half a length behind tho U!awa double. Poverty Bay led by a length from Uawa, who wero presently overhauled by tho Gisborne pair. YVith half tho distance covered, Gisborne was in a good position, half a length behind Poverty Bay, and Uawa had dropped back. Tho race developed into a battle between Poverty Bay and Gisborne, untjl in tho last hundred yards Poverty Bay drew away and won by about ‘twq and a-lialf lengths. Lightweight Doubles (1 mile); Poverty “Bay (O. Clarke and o’. Hansen) and Gisborne (G. C. §mith <tod E.' R. Goffe) dead befit; Uawa (J. and M. Lockwood) q. Uawa ancj Poverty Bqy w c fit- qwsyf together, fin'd bnU-way tUp course tyerq stjjl pearly level. Gisborne spurted qpd gained even terms with Uawa, and tlion drew ahead to lio alongside Poverty Bay. Tho. latter spurted, and a furlong from the finish seemed to have won the race, but Gisborno again cracked on pace, and the onlookers perceived that tho finish would bo a very close one. Stroke after stroke thq 't\yd boats neared tho goal, the. Uawa crow dropping out of the ’race to watch the finisp. Now Poverty Bay and pow Gisborne t oo ,k (lie lead, and at tRe exact ipoinent qf crossing lho lipo, the two ! boats were adjudged to bo dead level. ' T()0 t"*Q clubs divided tho points, the crews being accorded a great reception op their return to the landing, |

Youths’ Doubles (1 mile): Uawa (N. King and T. Dobbs) 1, Gisborne (Q. R. Stone and S. Lette) 2, Poverty Bay (E. Fitzmaurice and T. Sheen) 3. The race provided the best finish of the day, because all three boats were in the running at the finish, Gisborne again got the worst of the start, and had to pick up a good bit to regain even terms with Poverty Bay. Uawa led at the bridge by a couple of lengths, and Gisborne was about a length ahead of Poverty Bay. The leaders were being overhauled quickly, when the Gisborne crew appeared to lose pace, and Poverty Bay crept up and lay second. The Gisborne crew made a good recovery, however, and the three boats made a great race to the post. Uawa won by a canvs, and Gisborne took second place by three feet from Poverty Bay. The points scored were : Poverty Bay 6, Uawa 2, Gisborne 1. The Colley and Co. shield will be contested next year on Poverty Bay water, probably* at the Waipaoa river.
