TURKISH COUNTER-PROPOSALS
(Elcc. TO. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Australian and N.Z. On hie Association.) LONDON, April' 1. Tiro Allied l reply to the Turkish counter-proposals suggests the proinpt resumption of negotiations. It accepts in principle the proposal to redraft-, the clauses relating to. capitulations with a view to securing recognition to Turkey of the benefit of reciprocity as far as ■practicable. The reply refuses Turkey's request to remove the economic clauses from tho treaty, ; but expresses' the opinion that an agreement could • be reached by mutual concessions. It declares that the Allies invited! their nationals, who bad acquired interests in Turkey, to enter into negotiations directly with the Turkish Government. In the event of the negotiations resulting successfully, the-Allies will.not insist upon an insertion in the treaty of their previously detailed provisions.- The reply expressed' the conviction that with equal goodwill on both sides, peace could bo concluded without difficultv. -
The Allied - reply to the Turkish counter-proposals expresses surprise • that Jsniet should! have rc-apciied tho various questions lie accepted as settled at Lausanne, and should have raised 'several entirely new points. Nevertheless, in an -earnest desire tq expedite the conclusion of a just and lasting peace, the Allies are ready to discuss Turkey’s counter proposals on ‘the distinct ’understanding that the economic clauses shall also be reopened and), reconsidered.
LONDON, April 2. The Allies’ Note leaves the Turks to fix a (Lite for the next Lausanne conference ; 'otherwise it is a vague document, deliberately refraining from a definite; refutation of the jeitcralcd Turkish claims and: seeking! to leave the door open for the resumption of negotiations,
