BIG DAY AT MOTUHORA.

THE SPORTS MEETING

The Motuhora Sports Club’s second an'nual meeting, held on Easier Saturday, was one of the most successful gatherings held in the district. Favored with a perfect day,., and a large attendance, the club have every reason to ho gratified with the. result of their on deavors to, put on a good day's sport. Great; credit- is due to the secretaries arid the working committees for the able manner in which the sports were conducted. A large number of townspeople: .took advantage- of the train arrangements and had a day’s outing in the country. During the day the Aloluliora Brass Band rendered selctions, which‘.’were greatly appreciated by 'he holiday-makers. A feature of the chopping events, ihe 12in. standing and the president’s handicap 15in. standing, was that they were won by father and-son. Young Noag Costello winning the 12in. and old Ned winning the big chop. This old sport chopped very well indeed and a great shout went up when his block fell first. Three protests were lodged during the day, two. in the chopping events, challenging the sizes of the blocks, and one in the double-handed sawing contest. The first protest was disallowed, and the second being lodged before the big •chop, the judges had to re-measure the blocks. One being undersized was thrown out. The protest in the sawing contest was considered, and the committee declared no event, the event being re-sawed, and it-was again won Jay the previous winners, Messrs. V. Anderson and J. Wallace.

- Before the train left, Air. Thos. Quirk, the) patron of the club, presented Mr. Rtthe Harris (who chopped second in the president’s handicap) with a handsome silver cup donated by the president, Mr. V. Anderson, for the fastest time in the event. Air. Quirk congratulntd Air. Harris on his win, and hoped he would repeat- the performance next year. The medal donated by. Air. J.■ Drum--mend for the most points in the 103, .2Co,’.and 440yds, was won by A. Ingrain, ,df Gisborne,: and. the medal donated, by Mr:. H. Swan for the winner, of the local handicap 100yds., was. won by Re?Thomas.,. , ■ .< .*•:

The luncheon: booth was in .the capable hands of .ALessUmes Quirk and Drummond, who always achieve, success. . ; Two Gisobrne sports,. . Messrs. Bert Davy and H.. J. .Edwards, . acted as starter and judge respectively, and great satisfaction was expressed at the capable way in which they carried out their duties. Air. W. Cunningham, of Alatawai, who acted as starter for the chopping and saw events, was at his best, and competitors in these events say that he is “out on his own.’’

To finish up a successful day a dance was hold in the Motuhora Hall, and was voted , a splendid turn-out. The only fault ..was that it was a..-Saturday night, and as -Sunday comes even to Motuhora, the dance was stopped at 12 o’clock - . The hall was beautifully decorated, and the thanlcs of the Sports Club are duo to Air. Laurie Quirk and his willing committee for the splendid way in which they had nrrUngtd everything. Fully 60 couples tripped the light fantastic, and great was -the disappointment- when the Al’siC. announced the last dance. Later on the. club, intend to give a ball, and then dancers will have the chance,of a full night’s enjoyment.. The Sports Club intend to put most of their profits, into haying their ground improved, and next year athletes will havetno cause to-complain of.the tracks. At present- th running tracks are not very good, but when one considers that two years ago the ground was a wilderness of stumps and logs, great credit must he given to those n\en who, in the interests of sport-, and to have a place for a little recreation, put in a great many hours and days of hard work. Next, year horse events will be put on the programme, ao,d as these events are very popular, the next meeting should be a larger success than in the past. Results : Boys’, race : J. Sefton 1, W.
