GOTHARD ELECTRIFIED
Tlio St. Gothard railway, a line well known to all Continental travellers, has now been completely electrified over a cpstanco of W 0 miles from Lucerne to Chiasso, on the Italian-Swiss frontier, states the Engineer. With steam traction it needed 100,000 tons of coal a. year, which, is no longer required ; and some ten years hence all the Swiss railways will cease to be dependent on imported coal. The journey from Lucerne to Chiasso is shortened by one hour as the result of the change," and the smoke-nuisance, which was almost intolerable in the tunnels, has been eliminated. The continuation of the lino from Lucerne to Basle will be readv for electric traction in 1924. Tho cost of electrification is believed to be £65.000 per mile, or about what the line originally cost to construct. A saving in expenses of operation amounting to 33 per cent, of the cost with steam is expected to be realised.
