DUTCH MOTOR. SHIP. The Dutch oil tank motor-ship Hermes, 3768 tons, is an object of considerable interest at Auckland. She arrived there on Wednesday night., from Singapore with 100,000 cases of Sumatra benzine, having accomplished the voyage in 23 days. In this connection it is instructive to recall that the Union S.S. Co. is having built tho world’s largest motor-ship for the Van-couver-New Zealand-Sydney service, a giant vessel with a speed more than equal to that of. the Niagara. Built in Glasgow in 1914, the two motor engines of the Hermes give a total of 2240 h.p., enabling the vessel to attain a speed of 10-1 knots per hour in favorable weather. These two engines burn only seven tons of oil daily, and it is estimated that their care and attention is so minimised that a saving is effected of 10 men’s work as compared with a steamer • of similar size. The vessel can start her engines and get under way at a minute’s notice. Tho engines are started, by air’compression, produced by a small motor-pump. ..Steam is not completely excluded from the engineroom, however. A boilor of'very small dimensions is employed to generate steam to operate the stealing gear and winches, and to supply a heating system throughout the vessel. The interior capacity of the vessel Ts taken up with 24 oil tanks. Valves at the lower ends of the-tanks connect with a pipe line running round the lower part of the ship’s hull. In the operation of loading the vessel tho oil is pumped, by means of tlie ship’s pumping engines, to this pipe beneath the water line; and the liquid can Ire admitted into any number of the tanks at will by. regulation- tho valves. It is possible to fill the ship at tlie rate of 500. tons qf oil per hour. The tanks are of steel and 14 of them arc constructed to hold 300 tons in water and the remaining 14 to hold 100 tons in water. , The ship’s total capacity is 5000 tons of liquid cargo. Owing to the fact that. New Zealand, ports are not equipped with suitable oil tanks in which to discharge a liquid cargo, the Hermes carries her present shipment in case form. The cifses are stacked into the 28 oil tanks in much the.isame way as they would be dealt with ill a steamer’s ' hold. The vessel lias 6ne funnel, by which the: spent oil fumes from the engines are emitted, but when the engines are rum ning smoothly the ship travels practically smokeless. , ■
