Increased activity in the shipping industry in Japan has been apparent for some time, and the Japanese merchant marine flag is now floating over a much larger fleet than hitherto. Japanese companies have recently purchased some 75,000 dead-weight tons of British ships* this amount being a fair percentage of the total tonnage sold in England during the first quarter of this year. In most instances the vessels changed hands at figures which would have been considered absurdly low a few years ago. One ship of 7,500 tons was sold on 1919 for £125,000, but. when offered for sale again a month or two ago the vendors were satisfied to dispose of her at £22,500. Another vessel, which brought £150,000 in 1917, is now worth, in view of the state of the shipping industry in any country where high wages are demanded, £45,000. The Japanese ship buyers are taking every advantage of these prices, and are buying up suitable vessels in preparation for the time when the industry revives, and .when the vessels may be profitably employed. The undermentioned have booked passages by the Arahura, sailing for Napier to-nighti:—Misses Lette, Lamprere, Kirk, Robinson; Mesdamcs Weeks, O'Donnell, Fairlie, Hughes and infant, Wilkinson, Thompson, Robinson and 2 children Hyland and 3 children, Gleeson and 2 children ; Messrs Hein, Nash, Jenkins, Blair, Black Weeks, O'Donnell, Gray, Major, Campbell, Powell, Wildish, Chisholm, Munro, Patton, Bett, Reader (2).
