AUSTRALIAN BEEF.

POOR QUALITY AND LOW PRICES. SYDNEY, June 27.—Mr A. B. Triggs, the well-known Yass pastoralist, returned on Saturday by the Narkunda alter a 12 months' tour of Europe.

Regarding tho frozen beef trade he disclosed a< most unsatisfactory state of affairs.

"The week I left England," said Mr Triggs, "the price of our frozen beef was as low as 3-;Jd per lb., while English and Scottish realised three times that quotation, and Argentine! made about 7i,d. These figures were for hindquarters at wholesale rates.

"The competition from American interests is greater now than for many years, largely accelerated by the numerous shops spread throughout England in the 'interests! opposed to our trade. The English and! Scottish beef is, in my opinion, incomparably superior to that of Australian beef in England (which is much lesa palatable than Australian beef in Australia). Argentine chilled is superior, too; but not to tho extent thai the range of values would indicate. "T noticed in passing through Perl Said, Bombay and Ceylon that our meats were featured. Steak was quoted at Is 4d retail, and .sirloin at Is, and for mutton by the carcase was asked} Against our mutton there is' but little prejudice, -while our lambs nro held in popular favor.'' Summing up his tour, Mr Triggs said that, in Switzerland he snw very little wealth, as we understand the term, and littlo poverty. The country l*sembled' a huge park, with excellent landlords and splendid tenants. There was no evidence: of poverty to be seen in fho large Herman cities, such as existed in other European cities.
