UNEMPLOYMENT.
RAPIDLY GROWING PROBLEM
(Special to the Herald.l WELLINGTON, this dav
It is ahi unfortunate fact- that the amount- of unemployment in New Zealand to-day is larger than at the corresponding 'period of last year. The figures have grown rapidly , this month, and the Government’s relief works are extending. There- were over ICCO men on tlie Staterelief works at- it ho beginning of April, hut. the total has grown substantially since that, date, and it is'estimated that throughout- the Dominion over SCOO men are without work. To provide them with employment will ho a task for local authorities and private individuals as welLa.s the Government, which is limited by the funds available for this special purpose. Provision has been made by the Government, however, to absorb another 15C0 men on,-relief works as the pressure, of unemployment grows. Analysis of the JJojninipn’s unemployed, figures shows that- Auckland is host off of the four large centres, and that- 'Taranaki and .Wanganui districts have provided' 200 of, the total : men on relief works, equalling WeTfingtoh’s quota.
